Migrated to/Born in Australia

Margaret Galvin was born in Tipperary around 1832. Haven't quite confirmed  a birth for her yet.

Her life in Ireland is a complete mystery

From the Workhouse .... to the Earl Grey Scheme and to Victoria, Australia on the 'Pemberton' in 1849

No parents listed, no workhouse found

In Victoria, Australia she married James Winward (an English ex convict) and had 11 children. I am descended from that 11th child.

She died in 1875 from 'sub acute inflammation of the liver & spleen'

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1832
Date of Death 16th Sep 1875

  • Possible that she was one of 60 girls chosen from Roscrea workhouse. She was described as 17 years old, a house servant, Roman Catholic and could read. The Pemberton is the same ship that my GG Grandmother arrived on, Judith Pound was 18 and from the Roscrea workhouse. https://www.ancestry.com.au/imageviewer/collections/1204/images/IMAUS17…

  • thanks for that info, i actually have that, and i believe she came from a Tipperary workhouse, as Roscrea on the ancestry doc is a mistake, and on the doc it just says Tipperary. Person above was from Roscrea, so the transcriber made a mistake!
