Great grandmother Margaret Murphy Daly

Born: 12 Jan 1857 Borrisoleigh Tipperary, Ireland. Parents: William Murphy and Honora Foley.

Emmigrated to Australia about 1877.

1879 Married John Joseph Daly, (b. Rahanisky, Kilcully, Cork, Ireland) at Romsey Victoria, Australia: They had 7 Children.

Husband John Joseph Daly died in 1895 of Consumption after many years of illness.

1903 to 1906 Margaret was living in Romsey with her son Michael Joseph Daly. Occupation: Home duties.

1908 son William living at Lindenow, near Sale Victoria, Australia. Labourer

1909 to about 1912 Margaret Murphy Daly now living in Lindenow, Victoria, Australia with siblings William, Nora (Honora), Michael and wife Lucy Ellen Tully (of Romsey)

1913 Margaret living in Pyrmont, Sydney, Australia with Michael & Lucy, Norah and John (my grandfather).

1926 Death of Margaret Murphy Daly, 6th November 1926 at Pyrmont, Sydney, Australia. Aged 68.

“Margaret's early life in Australia would have been horrendous. Her husband John Joseph Daly suffered from consumption (tuberculosis) and according to a police report he was also epileptic. The police report also said (of his incapacity) that he was quite unfit to look after his family. He died in 1895. The family relied on the people of Romsey and the church to survive. This situation and 6 surviving children probably tipped Margaret Murphy over the edge. Upon release for the last time from the asylum in 1898 Margaret would have found a safe haven with siblings Michael and William both working and having a place of abode and reunited with her other children who had been placed in an orphanage.”
