Margaret St Aubyn : Short Biography

Margaret Scott is one of seven servants listed as working in Coorheen House, Loughrea, Co. Galway in the 1901 census. Her job title is listed as Ladies Maid and she served under Sarah Julilana, the Dowager Countess of Cloncarty. Margaret is listed as 40 years old at the time of the census which places her birth in 1861. Her place of origin is given as County Meath, though no particular parish is specified.

Margaret, along with her mistress and all but one of her coworkers was a member of the Church of Ireland. One co-worker in particular must have caught her eye. The marriage of Margaret Scott and Jesse St Aubyn is recorded in Loughrea in 1903, when Margaret would have been 42 years old. Jesse's occupation is listed as 'Butler' and both of their residences are given as Coorheen House, Loughrea. So it would seem that romance bloomed in the workplace. The 1901 census does not mention Jesse, instead a 28 year old man named Alfred Irons is recorded as the Butler of the household, so it would seem that Jesse took on the job sometime in those two years.

Margaret was the daughter of John Scott, a gardener, and Jesse was the son of a dentist whose name is given as E.C. St Aubyn. 

The 1911 census tells us that Margaret and Jesse moved to Greystones where he worked as a Photographer. It also tells us that she was 12 years older than him and that they employed a Catholic girl from France named Anne McGrath as a servant.
