Margaret Sweeney was born around 1822 in Tuam, Galway. She married Thomas Ford in January 1845 and they moved to Pennington, Lancashire between then and when their daughter Margaret was born there in 1850. Margaret and Thomas's five other children were born over the next few years in various locations around Lancashire and neighbouring counties: Thomas (1852, Westleigh), Lawrence (1853, Leigh), Patrick (1855, Loughborough), Edward (1857, Derbyshire), and Mary (1861, Derby). Margaret died at the age of 81 in 1903, following the death of Thomas in 1884.

Margaret and Thomas's daughter Mary Ford married Patrick Lally, whose parents (Michael Lally and Bridget Healey) had also moved from Tuam to Lancashire at around the same time, so it seems likely that they connected with an established community from Tuam in their new home.
