Margret (maiden name unknown) married Edward FITZMORRIS about 1832, likely in Co. Limerick or Co. Kerry.

Margret was born 7 August 1797 in Abbeyfeale, Limerick.

Edward and Margret had four (known) children:

  • Edward Jr. (abt. 1832);

  • Michael J. (1833-1836);

  • Mary Margaret (about 1840);

  • and my 2nd-great grandfather, Garrett Edward (1846-1847).

It appears that Margret's husband died before 1852, the year that she and the four children emigrated to the United States (stated in son Michael's 1900 US Census entry).

By 1870, Margret was living with son Michael in Persia, Cattaraugus Co., New York.  She died on 9 August 1891 in Dayton, Cattaraugus, NY.  She was a member of St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Dayton, and is buried in the church's cemetery there, among several members of the LUNGEY family, who may be related?  One burial, 2nd nearest in age to Margret, is for Patrick LUNGEY, d. 1883, age 47; an adjacent grave for "mother of Patrick" gives no further name nor dates, but could be contemporary with Margret ___ Fitzmorris.  Patrick LUNGEY's name is mentioned twice in records of St. Mary's RC Church in nearby Dunkirk, Chatauqua Co., NY.  Various LUNGEYs are affiliated with TOOMEYs, who may be related to TWOMEYs in Abbeyfeale, Limerick.  The headstone for Margret ___ Fitzmorris states her birth date "in Co. Limerick," and her date of death.  "FITZMORRIS" is more often spelled "FITZMAURICE" in Ireland, but consistently (in our branch) as FITZMORRIS in the United States.

Additional Information
Date of Birth 7th Aug 1797
Date of Death 9th Aug 1891

  • Hello there, I have been searching forever for some link with your Margret but no luck so far so I investigated each one of the four children and cannot find any link whatsoever with either spelling of the Fitzmorris/Fitzmaurice name: I have looked in Roots.ie; Ancestry; Find my past; and the National archives however I have found many entries for Edward in the Griffiths Valuation and land tax records for land held by the said Edward Fitzmaurice/Fitzmorris for lands held in Kerry but cannot tie up dates to your Edward. Look specifically at entry 21.6.1852 Poulawaddra,  Ballyseedy Parish fieldbook in the National Archives for Ireland (it's a free site) and look at the film MFGS/54/112 OL/4/2580

    Well worth your having a closer look at each individual record as something might strike a bell.

    I have one other very tentative lead but you will have to investigate it further:- Edmund Fitzmaurice a birth registered in St. Mary's Cork City: the father is Walter and the mother is Mary Bambrick

    I am confused with the headstone that you have shown - I cannot read any of the inscription, can you give me a lead,  Where did you get any information about Abbeyfeale? Also I cannot see any record of the name family or of anyone of the children on a boat leaving Irelandor the UK (many people went via Liverpool). So it appears that I cannot help you any further however please do let us know how you get on with your searches and feel confortable to come back if you think that you can give us more information, although what you have here is pretty conclusive I think. Wishing you sincere Good Luck in your efforts
