Martin left his home Coolusty in Athleague around 1879. He was the eldest son of Patrick Clayton and Bridget Lally and had eight siblings, seven of whom emigrated to the US.
Martin's father remarried after Bridget died and had a second family. The original farmhouse still stands in Athleague and is actively farmed.
