Mary Ashman 1852

Back to List

My great grandmother Mary Ashman was born in Glenville on 9th September 1852. Her parents were John Ashman and Elizabeth Spillane.

I only found out about my great grand mother's sad life about a year ago, I didn't even know her name. My father never mentioned his grandparents and to my shame I never inquired while he had his senses. Dad got dementia in his late 60's and the time for asking questons passed us all by.

Perhaps he wouln't have told me about her and for all I know maybe his father had kept her life secret out of Catholic guilt.

Through online resourses like The census 1901 and 1911, various Geneology sites like findmypast.ie, irishgeneology.ie and rootsireland.ie and the National Archives along with talking to various family members  we have been able to piece together who she was.

Her name was Mary Ashman. In 1901 she lived in Glenville with her father John Ashman and her 15 year oly son John Buckley (my grandfather). She was unmarried. I can only imagine what her life must have been like raising her illigitimate son who was born in 1886. His father was mentioned on his birthcert which was unusual at the time. His name was John Buckley.

His father was mentioned again on my grandfather's marriage cert, this time it said John Buckley, farmer.
