  • I was wondering if this is the same Mary Brennan, daughter of Matthew Brennan and (I think) Mary McDermott from Athlone who married James O’Meara/O’Mara at St Peter’s Church, Athlone on the 31st March 1850. They had a daughter, Mary Ann, in Athlone, in 1851, christened at St Peter’s in September of that year. Mary’s husband, James O’Meara/O’Mara had something to do with the 4th Light Dragoons who were based in Athlone at the time. He wasn’t a serving soldier and I have been unable find out what his role was. The family were in Hampshire England by the the time of the England 1861 Census. They had three more children by then, Walter Matthew O’Mara, Thomas Edward O’Mara & Charles O’Mara. The family were living in very close proximity to the Commanding Officer of the 4th Light Dragoons. In 1864 they had their fifth and final child, another boy, James. James O’Mara Snr also died in 1864.

Mary and the children them moved from Hampshire to Lancashire. She eventually remarried to Thomas Nield in 1869. They had a daughter, Annie Tynan Nield in 1874.

Mary died in 1897 and is buried I Mossley Cemetery (Lancashire).

there are still both O’Mara’s and Brennans in the Mossley area.
