Mary (Nanny by grandchildren) Crean (sometimes misspelled Crane) was born on June 19, 1873, in Camp Townland in the Ratass Civil Parish, Kerry, Ireland to Ellen Dowd and Martin Crean. Her nickname was Molly. Mary came to Connecticut and kept house for her brothers immediately after she emigrated to America on the SS Britannic in 1893. She had eleven children with Patrick Joseph Flaherty, including Thomas Francis Flaherty. Mary Crean Flaherty died on May 13, 1962, in Waterbury, Connecticut, at the age of 88. Obituary: "Mary Flaherty died on May 13, 1962, which was Mother's Day that year. She was active to the very end, directing the preparations for dinner, before saying, 'I'm tired.' She lay down on the [living room] coach and expired peacefully." She is buried at the Calvary Cemetery in Waterbury in the same lot where are also buried her husband and daughter, Helen. Many other family members are buried in the same cemetery.
