Mary Francis Gormley was born in Fermoy, Co. Cork in 1868 to Edward Gormley (1824-1897) and Mary Casey (1841-1888).
She was one of six children. Her siblings were,
- John James (b. 1865)

- Francis Martin (b.1870 - d. 1935)
- Patrick (b. 1876)

Her father was employed as the Master of Fermoy Union Workhouse, a position that was later taken up by her brother Francis Martin.

Mary Francis' husband Christopher died in 1904 in Philadelphia.
The 1911 Irish census shows that Mary Francis and her son Herbert Francis moved back to Ireland and lived in her ancestral home of Fermoy. Prior to this they had been living in Liverpool from 1904 to 1910.
Back in Fermoy, Mary Francis remarried, this time to a man named Christopher Joseph Healy (1867-1923).
