Mary Jane McBurney married Thomas Massey in 1837 and settled in Moneyslane in the parish of Drumgooland, County Down, Ireland. Her husband worked as a scutcher[1], likely at the flax mill near his home. [2][3].
Mary Jane died in Moneyslane in 1887 as reported by Sarah Megaffin, who was living with her at the time of her death.[1][3] The relationship of Megaffin to the Masseys is unknown. Mary Jane's reported age on the death record would put her birth around 1824, which would make her 13 when married in 1837, and 14 for the birth of her first child in 1838. She was more likely at a few years older, but to date, no documentation of her birth has been found.
All six known surviving children of Thomas and Mary Jane immigrated to Massachusetts where all but the youngest son are known to have settled in Boston and Cambridge, married and had families. Robert and his 2nd wife left Boston sometime after 1882[4]. and ended up in Mahattan, New York.
