Mary O'DEA was born on August 30, 1868, in Kinvara, County Galway, Ireland. Her parents were John O'Dea and Bridget Donohue (an apparent error in the parish baptismal record shows her mother's maiden name as "Hoad", but Mary herself reported her mother's maiden name as Donohue; see NY marriage record for her second marriage in 1917; all of her siblings also reported mother's name as Donohue). Siblings: Michael (buried Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY; Find-a-Grave memorial # 184113239); Nora O'Dea Duane McCann (buried Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, NY;Find-a-Grave memorial #184114436); Owen (buried in Stamford, CT); Catherine (buried in Stamford, CT), Patrick (died at age 14 in Ireland, in 1880), and John (born in 1857, unknown death/burial). She first came to the United States in 1882 (at the age of 14). She married Michael MULKERIN in 1892 in Brooklyn, and they had one son and two daughters together between 1893 and 1897. They lived in Brooklyn, NY. Her daughter Mary died of scarlet fever in 1897. Her husband died in January of 1900. She brought her two surviving children, John and Jane, to Kinvara to live with her mother (they appear in the 1901 census living with their grandmother, Bridget, and their uncle Owen) and she returned to the U.S. where she worked at various jobs, including cook and housekeeper. She made some visits to Ireland to see her children, using a steamer trunk purchased in Stamford, Connecticut (with a gold plate engraved, "M. Mulkerin, Co. Galway"). She brought each of the children back to the U.S. when they turned 15. She married Samuel Flack in 1917. They lived in Clifton Springs, NY., where she worked at a sanitarium and eventually became a practical nurse. She died on June 18, 1959, in Rochester, New York, at the age of 90.
