Mary was born in Co. Cavan. According to he Australian death certificate her parents were James Rutherford and Nancy Doribty or Doubty or ? (the writing is illegible)
She married Samuel Cassidy and was living at Skeagh lake near Bailieborough when Samuel applied for a free passage to South Australia for his himself, Mary and their five sons in April 1839. The couple had four more children born in South Australia.
Following the death of Samuel in 1855, Mary moved to New South Wales and lived with the family of her son Henry Adams Cassidy. She died at Limestone valley near Cargo, NSW in 1882
