Mary Ryan Haley was born on 27 August 1857 in Moneytucker, (now Courtnacuddy) Wexford to James and Mary Ryan. She lived there until at least her confirmation, recorded in 1869. She had a twin brother, Thomas, an older brother John, and a younger sister, Bridget.
The family moved before 1881, and most went to Durham, England to work the coal mines. Brother John emigrated to the US and landed in Belmont, Ohio around 1800. He married Anna Jane Hartline and had three children: William, Carl, and John Thomas (Tom) Ryan.
