My grandmother from the area of Newmarket on Fergus, Co Clare. I don't know much about her yet except that she had two sons, my father, Roy Gilligan, and his brother Joey. Left the area in the 1940s or 50s to go to London.

  • 1901 Irish census has a Timothy Ward with his wife Mary in the townland of Granaghan Beg, Newmarket-on-Fertgus. He is described as an Agricultural Labourer. 1911 census records Mary as a widow, living alone.

Apparently they hd a family of 4, 3 of whom were still living in 1911. Their names are not recorded.

There is a James Ward in the nearby townland of Ballycar who is a widower in 1901.  1911 census residing with him are 4 children: Maria, 16, Ellen, 14, James 12 and Joseph/Patrick, aged 10. His mother Anne is also there.

James Ward is recorded as a farmer.

You might find out who Mary's father was and get back to me.

    Regards

    McCoy
