Matthew Creighton 1826

Back to List

Matthew Creighton, my second great grandfather was born around 1926, likely in Sligo, County Sligo. He married Mary Davey on July 23, 1850, in his hometown. They had 12 children in 24 years, including my great grandmother, Mary Margaret (Margaret) Creighton, who married John Murray in Ballina, County Mayo. The Creightons lived on Chapel Street in Sligo Town. The Murrays resided in Ballina but made regular visits to the Creightons in Sligo.

Matthew died on March 11, 1903, in Chapel Street, Sligo, Ireland, at age 77. He dropped dead in the yard of his coachbuilding business, which was located in Rivertown, Sligo.

The Creighton family seems to be related to the Creighton families in Roscommon, as one of them, Denis Creighton, was listed as a visitor on the 1901 census.

The Creightons were a musical bunch. In fact, Matthew Creighton's great grandson was noted violinist, John Creighton Murray, of Queens, New York. John Creighton Murray inherited the family's Perry violin, which is on permanent loan to Harvard Univiersity.
