In 1865, Matthew and father Michael and wife Bridget and sibling Michael emigrated to Australia aboard the ship 'Lightning' and settled in the state of Victoria. For a time they lived at Malmsbury.
At some point the family decided to leave Victoria and went north to the town of Deniliquin where they settled permanently. The father of Matthew is buried in White Hills Cemetery in Bendigo, dying a year after the family arrived from Clare.
