Matthew McCahill was born in Ireland on 13 July 1843. One Iowa newspaper article indicates that "he came to Iowa, [USA] with his parents in 1853, The family settled near Churchville, Warren County, Iowa, USA."
He served in the Civil War in the 34th Regiment, Iowa Infantry Company H.
Matthew married Catherine Donovan about 1870. They had at least seven children. In the 1880 US census, he was listed as a 36-year-old farmer. His wife, Catherine died in 1892.
Mr. McCahill died at the home of his cousin, Hannah Cosgriff in Des Moines, Iowa on 14 January 1931. Services were held from St. Ambrose Cathedral.
Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Warren County, Iowa, USA where he is buried next to his wife.
