Michael Barrett (1789 – 1854) born possibly in Loughglynn, Co. Roscommon, Ireland
He enlisted in the 40th Regiment of Foot in 1817 in Scotland, after desertion from an unknown regiment.
In 1824, Michael was mustered on board the ‘Phoenix’ in Portsmouth harbour, England. The ship was to transport Irish convicts to Tasmania.
At some stage he married Eleanor (Ellen) Rourk (Rourke or Rowan) (1789 -1869). They had about 10 children (mostly in Tasmania). Ellen arrived in Tasmania on 9 April 1825 per Lady East with 3 children Catherine, John & Edward who were born in Ireland.
Catherine Ann, b. 1816/7 Cavan, Ireland; died 1853 in Hobart. Baptised 9 Feb 1817,
Catherine married Richard Ray in 1832 and they had one daughter Ada Zillah (Adesila). He died in 1838 and Catherine married Peter Smith in 1843. There were 3 sons, Henry William 1845, John Thomas 1848 & George Michael 1850. Their daughter Ellen died in 1853 shortly before her mother.

His occupation was boat builder, late of Bruny Island (Barnes Bay). John married Mary Ann Charlotte Smith in 1852. There were 9 children: John Michael 1855-1880; Christopher Cornelius 1858-1873; William Norton 1861-1883; Eleanor Ann 1863-1930; Edward John 1865-1925; Mary Ann Charlotte 1868-; Elizabeth 1871 -; James Samuel 1874-1874; and Maria Agnes 1875.

In 1845, Edward married Esther Jane Garth in Hobart. Three children were born Edward Alfred 1846; Eleanor Ann 1848 and Emma Louisa 1851.
Edward & Esther are my 2x great grandparents.
Very ittle is known about their life in Ireland prior to immigrating to Tasmania. We know they were catholic. Nothing is known of Michael's birth or marriage to Ellen. Nothing is known of Ellen until the birth of Catherine. There may have been another son Patrick who died prior to immigation.
