Michael Bernard Kelly was born on August 7, 1871, in Galway, Ireland and his birth was registered in the district of Williamstown.
His parents were Bernard Kelly and Margaret Kelly (nee Fleming) who were married in the Roman Catholic Chapel of Glynsk in Williamstown on October 24th, 1870.
Michael was the oldest of 7 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood.
His mother died shortly after giving birth to her youngest child in March of 1882. His father moved to the United States later that same year.
Michael moved to the United States around 1890 and married Eliza Brophy in Boston, Massachusetts in 1899.
He spent several years working as the chauffeur, horse trainer and horse racer, for a local Massachusetts magnate, Thomas Lawson, in Scituate, Massachusetts. During his time working at the Lawson Estate, he earned himself the nickname 'Glorious Kelly' which appears in many local articles about his horse racing days.
He later moved to Weymouth, Massachusetts with his wife and seven children and went on to have a long career at the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts.
He passed away in June of 1960 at the age of 88.
