Michael Gaugharty was born in Temple Michael, Longford in 1811. His father was also named Michael, and he possibly had a brother John born 1800. Michael enlisted in the British Army in 1827 at Athlone, Co. Westmeath. He joined the 27th Reg. of Foot. He married Sarah Scrothron (Scawthorne) from Sheffield, England. He died in Bristol England in 1974.
