Michael was born in Crewmeague, Kilmore Parish, County Monaghan, about 1828, He was the eldest son of Joseph and Bridget (?) Gavin/Gavan of Crewmeague. Joseph lost the farm around 1835. His father was Michael, and he is in the 1796 Flax growers list. Michael and his youngest brother James emigrated to America January, 1848, aboard "the New World". The ended up in Buffalo, NY, and eventually were joined by brothers Patrick and Joseph, and sisters Catherine Gavin McCabe, and Mary J. Gavin Farmer, and their families.
