  • Hello:

There is a reference in the Feakle Lower baptism register of a Michael Guilfoyle born to Martin Guilfoyle and Peggy Bleach who was baptised on 11 November 1860.  His sponsor was Mary Durack.

There isn't a matching Michael Guilfoyle in the Scariff parish register for 1859.  The only Michael Guilfoyle noted is one who was born about 1870..  This man appears to have died in 1945 in Scariff.

Let me know if the first reference sounds as if it could match.

    All the best,

    Hi Jane,

Thanks very much for your interest.   The christening record I have shows that Michael was christened in 1860 in Scarriff, but looking at the certificate, the name was written as 'Kilfoil' a known variation in the spelling.  I think all his siblings were styled the same way.   His father was also Michael and mother Mary 'Pearl'  although we know her as Perrill.  They were born in 1822 and 1829 respectively.

I'm trying to find more info on Michael's grandfather, possibly Patrick, and mother, possibly Anne, but the trail cools down :)

    Regards

  • Hi Desmond:

I see that entry now.  I remember that in the Tulla parish register, the priest noted that the surname Powell and Kilfoyle and Guilfoyle were all the same families.  Very interesting.    Yes, unfortunately, the records are very poor pre-1860.  Do you think that they married in Scariff or elsewhere?  I believe that the some of the Perrill families were located in the Caher/Killanena area.  I know that those records begin in 1844.

Yes, Jane,I believe they were married in Scarrif and came from a farm nearby the town.  Back in the late Fifties the wife of my second cousin visited Scarrif and actually went to one of the farming properties, around 180 actres, and also met another Guilfoyle in a small drapery shop in Scarrif.  Prior to my visit last year, I tried to locate Guilfoyles, but vcouldn'tfind any in the phone directory in Scarriff.  Next visit, I'll do my homework more thoroughly!

Five brothers and a sister emiograted to Perth, Western Australia, firstly in 1878 and then in the early Eighteen-Eighties.  The mother, Mary Perrill (Pearl) also came after her husband Michael died in Scarrif in around 1876-77 and lived in Perth until her death in 1919 at the ripe old age of 90.

I'm trying to tie together all the threads to make a coherent history

    Regards

    Desmond

  • Michael & Mary Guilfoyle (nee Perrill) were my great great grandparents.  I have a copy of Mary's 20 April 1919 death certificate that lists the names and ages of living childern. The Michael you appear to be looking for is listed as 'Mihael 58 years'.  The death certicate also lists Mary's parents.  'Partrick Percell farmer' & 'Mary Welsh'

  • Hi Jane & Desmond

Sorry, I should have introduced myself.

    Michael (from Australia)

PS Mary's Australian death certificate lists Mary as being from "Guart Harnan", but her (Scariff) marrage certificate lists her as from "Turkenagh" and spells the names as "Kilfoyle" and "Peril". Their first(?) child's was "Biddy Kilfoil" (1855)

    Hi Michael,

    Many thanks for your contribution.

Ah right, so you are from the same gen of the family as me.  Which line of the family do you inhabit?  I'm from Michael who emigrated to Australia with brother John (The rest of the family came later as you rpobably know) and Michael senior is also my great, great grandfather.

I believe the family farm was in what they call Gortadera which is a stone's throw from Turkenagh within the Parish of Scarrif.  So that seems to make sense. I have a picture of the farmhouse.

Do you think Patrick Purcell is a spelling mistake, as I would imagine that Mary Perril would have the same name as her Father?

We could probably ahve a more fruitful conversation off-line but I dont know if this forum has a private message function.

    Cheers  Desmond

  • Hi Desmond,  John was my g grandfather.  I don't have much info on his brother (Michael).  However, I hope what little I have will help.

    From the Whitegate school records:

Denis moved from Iniscealtra School, Mountshannon to Lakyle School, Whitegate in 1874, age 11 years, and left school in 1879.

Michael moved from Iniscealtra School to Lakyle School in March 1875 and left in July of the same year.

William started in Lakyle School in May 1875 age 7 years and left in 1880.

Thomas started in Lakyle School in July 1878 and left in 1880.

Bridget started in Lakyle School in May 1880 and left in October 1880.

    &

Michael baptised 25 March 1860 sponsors Thomas Kilfoyle and Ellen Pearl (Peril?)

    &

Michael Guilfoyle married Norah Cooney at Perth in 1895.  Norah does not appear at the same address as him from about 1910 onwards, so perhaps they separated?  She died in 1938.  He died at Perth in 1932.

    Thanks very much Michael,

I learned several things.  I didn't have information in respect to his schooling and I notice that the younger siblings all left school in 1880 offering confirmation that they probably left Ireland with their mother Mary at that time. Very useful to know.

I have quite a lot of info on most of the brothers and Brigit after they came to Australia. The eldest brother Patrick had a rather tragic life, suffering from epilepsy. His mother, Mary, had him committed to Claremont Mental Institution on the 4th Septer 1911. He spent 23 long years as a patient, passing away in 1934 at the age of 75

But what I am aiming to do is get more info on the original brothers' father and grandfather - not an easy task.

    Cheers  Desmond

  • Hi Desmond

I agree that "Percell" is likely to be typo. As is "Mary Welsh' because John's baptism (1858) has Godparents of 'Thomas Kilfoyle and Kate Walsh'.  Grandmother? Aunt?

The Perth Truth in 1905 says John Kilfoyle had migrated to Perth in 1878 aged 19.  Other sources have him as arriving in 1880.  He worked on the railways, then at building, and eventually was a successful hotel keeper. Many of the rest of the family came to Perth aboard the Fitzroy in 1880 – these were Mary, Denis, William, Thomas and Bridget.  The ship appears to have been a small one with few passengers, so could have been a coastal vessel arriving from elsewhere in Australia.

Our great great grandfather was married in Scarriff in 1856 (as Michael Kilfoyle) and died in Whitegate as Michael Guilfoyle in 1876. His death certificate has him born in 1822.

I have also been looking for Michael’s parents.  I thought I had found them in Tulla, but that Michael wasn’t baptised until the 1830s.  (Unlikely for Catholics to take that long to 'water the head').

I have found a Michael baptised in 1823 in Woodford who had parents Patricius & Anne Kilfoyle.  Since Michael & Mary’s first son was named Patrick, I was thinking Patricius & Anne were looking likely until I discovered Mary’s father’s was Patrick.

I've now working on their first(?) daughter's name - 'Biddy Kilfoil" - being a possible grandmother's name.  There is a John and Biddy Kilfoil of childbearing age, who baptished a child 'Sally Carroll' in 1819 (Raheen Catholic Parish, Co. Laois). Unfortunately, no one seems to have digitised the records for the year Michael was born and my eyes are not up to reading the photos of the (online) handwritten records.

    Michael

ps I would love a picture of the farmhouse. :)

    Hi Michael,

Seems you're on the scent for Patrick and Anne, as I have them as parents too.  Often the church used latin to register events.

Happy to send a pic of the farmhouse, photographed by my cousin in the late eighties when she made contact with Guilfoyles and Cooney's in Bodyke and Scarrif.  They took her to the site.  Just add @tpg.com.au to my moniker on this forum.  I'm avoiding publishing it on an open forum because I will get swamped with spam.

Have you read Gwynne Guilfoyles account of John and family?  She did some significant research in the 70s and made contact with my grandfather, Patrick.  He knew all of John's children and went to school with some of them at the Christian Brothers in St George's Terrace in Perth.

Let's know if you want to read that account.

    Regards Desmond

  • Hi Michael,

Here's hoping your detective work on Patrick and Anne has proved fruitful.

I had a computer crash in April and have lost many email addresses when the hard drive was replaced.  Hence I am contacting you this way in the hope that you'll get a notification.

I've been writing up the Michael Guilfoyle and John, your great grandfather's, stories.  Came across a picture, too, of our great, great grandmother.    Happy to share my write-ups and other material if you're interested.  My email is mondodeco@tppg.com.au

    Cheers
