  • In the Doora-Kilraghtis Parish baptisms, there is a Michael Healy born 11 August 1833 to John Healy and Bridget McInerney. Other children are John, Patrick, Anna and another whose name is illegile. They resided in Cragane (Creggaun). Do you know Michael's sister's name?

Also living in the same townland is Patrick Healy who married to Bridget Nihil.

There are only a small number of Healy families in the Doora Parish baptisms.

  • Dear Kathy, Firstly, thank for your reply. I have been trying to find John Healy's wifes name for years and in my research I have been looking at marriages etc.. My computer has been out of order for a couple of months so it was a nice surprise to get your reply.

I have found a Marriage on 1st July 1838 of John Healy to Bridget ROUENE?? with witnesses Pat O'Gorman?? and James Clancy in Doora & Kilraghtis. Diocese of Killaloe.

From there I have found John Healy Baptised 23 May 1826 in Parish of Tulla, Killaloe, Clare. Father John HEALY and Mother Anne McInerny. Also there is a John HEALY Baptised  February? 1829 in Doora and Kilraghtis. Father's name John HEALY and mother Bridget McInerny.

Then I have Baptism in Diocese of Killaloe, Co. Clare 1 Mar 1821 to 23 Jan 1862. 29 Dec 1825 Pg26. Michael HEALY Jan 7th 1827. Parents Johannes HEALY and Biddy McInerhney. Dury Cregan with Witnesses Pat McInerheny and Nance McInerheny.

According to Michael's death certificate he was 29 yrs of age at marriage in St. Patricks Church, Adelaide, South Australia and he was illiterate and signed it with a cross. His death certificate also stated that he was 72 and this was date of certificate 28 January 1917. I also have a baptism record for Patrick Healy, parents Johannes Healy and Biddy McInerhney at Dury Cragane. Witnesses Pat McInerheny and Nance McInerheny.

The last list is, i think, from Abbey Records. 661- 7 Jan 1827 Patritius HEALY Father Johannes HEALY, Mother Biddy McInehiny, residence Cregane, Parish Doora, Sponsers Patrick McInerhiny and Nance McInerhiny Entry 660. 1042-2 November 1829, John HEALY. Father John HEALY, Mother Bridget McInerny of Cregane, Parish Doora. Wienesses Pat McInerny and Bridget HEALY Entry 1041.  2100- 6 June 1836 ? HEAH(?) Father Johannes HEAH(?) Mother Bridget McInerny - no residence or Parish, Sponsors Patritius McInerny + Hannah McInery, Entry 2099. 2319-4 June 1839 Anna HEALY, Father John HEALY, Mother Bridget McKINERNY. no residence or Parish, sponsors- Tom Garvey (Garry) and Hanah McKinerny, 2318.

I am not sure if Bridget McInerney is the right person as Michael's mother as the dates seem e bit out. According to Michael's death certificate it states his Birthplace and length of residence in Commonwealth as being born in Durah, Clare, Ireland, 52 years. That would mean he came to Australia at age 20 years of age. We have a Michael Healy aged 20 years coming to Australia on the Ship PEERESS from Plymouth on the 9th August 1866 and arrived on the 7th November 1866 at Port Adelaide in South Australia. Australia. I do not at this stage know how he got from Ireland to Plymouth to board the ship. of these statements are correct it would mean that he was born in about 1846. Michael married Mary McCue in St. Patricks Church in Adelaide, South Australia in January 1874. He stated that he was 29 years of age. He , according to this marriage certificate would have been born in about 1844.

In the process of doing Michael Healy's family i discovered that his sister, who was named Anne, also came to South Australia and according to her death certificate she was 40 years at her death in 2 February 1888. That would mean that she was born about 1847/8. this tallies up more with Michael's birth. Anne married a Patrick DINAN in January 1867 in St. Patrick's Church, Adelaide, South Australia. They had 8 children.

I hope this all makes sense to you because I cannot tally it up. Thank you for your time and patience. If you can Identify John + Michael's families I would love to hear what you think.

Thank you very much,  Patricia Elliott (nee HEALY)

  • Thanks you Pat

You have done some amazing research - far and wide! I have often found that actual birth/baptism dates can have huge variances when compared to their ages on marriage and death records. I have had variances of 10+ years for some of my people. Some of it could be transcription errors and some of it guess work (especially deaths).

At this point I don't have anything I can add to your already comprehensive reserach, but I will certainly keep an eye out and let you know if I come across anything further. I wish you well.
