Back to List

Michael J. Crisham was born in the town of Tuam to Michael Crisham (b. 20 July 1833 Tuam, d. 18 July 1880 Tuam) and Mary Henaghan Crisham (b. 1822 Tuam, d. 2 Dec 1902 Cincinnati, Ohio USA).

Henaghan was Mary's married name, and her maiden name is unknown. She had two children with her first husband: Patrick Henaghan (b. about 1847 in County Galway, d. 18 March 1895 in Cincinnati, Ohio USA) and Nora Henaghan (b. about 1854 in County Galway, d. 3 May 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio USA).

Michael and Mary were married 15 Oct 1855 in Tuam. In addition to Michael J., Michael and Mary had the following children: Peter Crisham (b. 9 May 1860 Tuam, d. 1863 Tuam), Judith Crisham (b. 9 May 1861 Tuam), Peter Crisham (b. 14 July 1864 Tuam), and Julia (b. 4 July 1867 Tuam, d. 22 Sept 1953 Cincinnati, Ohio USA).

Michael J. Crisham left Ireland in 1879, arriving in Cincinnati, Ohio where he would spend the rest of his life. He perhaps followed his half-siblings Patrick and Nora to this town. He was employed by the railroad as a freight truckman, loading, unloading and transferring freight. Following the death of his father in 1880, his mother Mary and sister Julia also came to Cincinnati and lived with him for several years. On 21 July 1887, Michael married Catherine Colgan and they went on to have 9 children.

Though Michael had left Ireland he did not leave his Irish heritage behind. His obituary in 1937 made note of the fact that he had won several prizes for his Irish folk dances at Coney Island on Irish Day.
