Michael Lally was born in 1824 in Tuam, Galway, to Bartholomew (Barthy/Bartly) Lally and Margaret (Peggy) Corlis, and baptised on 14 September 1824. He married Bridget Healey and their daughter Mary Lally was born in August 1848 in Tuam. By the 1851 UK Census the family was living in Pennington, Lancashire, and their four other children were born over the next few years around the same area: Bartholomew (1852), Margaret (1853), Michael (1855), Patrick (1857).

Bridget and Michael's son Patrick Lally married Mary Ford, whose parents (Margaret Sweeney and Thomas Ford) had also moved from Tuam to Lancashire at around the same time, so it seems likely that they connected with an established community from Tuam in their new home.

  • I have an ancestor named Dennis Lally who was born in March 1821. His father's name (as listed on his marriage certificate) was Bartly Lally.
Dennis Lally was married in Pennington Lancashire in 1848.
Dennis' daughter Margaret was born in Leigh, Lancashire on November 15, 1850.
The family emigrated to America after Margaret was born Her next oldest brother was born in Virginia USA in 1856.

I was wondering if Dennis Lally could be the brother of your Michael Lally?

  • Hi John, the information all fits together to draw that conclusion. At the 1851 census Michael and his family were living at 105 Bradshawgate in Pennington, a few doors down from Dennis, Bridget and Margaret at number 109. Many of Michael's descendants still live in the Leigh area. I was born there, though my parents brought our family to Adelaide in 1969. In fact I have a brother also named John Lally :). All the information I have gathered about our shared ancestry is on my Ancestry profile. -- all the best and great to meet you, Elaine Lally.
