Michael Lally 1838

Edit profile to show place of migration

My great granfather, Michael Lally was born in Loughrea, County Galway in 1838 or1839. We think, but are not sure, that his parents were Joseph Lally & Honora Kelly.. If they are his parents, his siblings would be Maria b. 1829, Ann or Anna b. 1836, Patrick b. 1842 and Honora b.1843. We think he also had another brother James but can find no record of a James being born to Joseph Lally & Honora Kelly. Michael emigrated to the US in the 1850's, first settling in New York City and moving across the Hudson River to Hoboken, New Jersey where he remained until he died in 1904. He was a butcher by trade, was active in local politics and became Police Commissioner , an office his son Michael, my grandfather also held..

  • I just was looking for information on my Donlans from Loughrea and came across this book that looks interesting on amazon. Its actually about the Lally family of Loughrea, dont know if you already know it or if it is even your family, but you might want to check it out.

The Leaving of Loughrea: An Irish Family in the Great Famine

This is the story of the Lally family between 1818 and 1848. It could just as easily be your story if you have ancestors who were among over a million people who left the beautiful and tragic land of Ireland in the 1840s. This family lived in the Loughrea area, County Galway, Ireland, and their story is similar to that of so many Irish families as they struggled against the odds, were overwhelmed by the tragedy of the Great Famine, and were forced to leave their beloved homeland. This book explores how the Irish lived at this time, how they thought, and the reasons for their situation in Ireland. It brings together the many strands of Irish society and the economics, politics, and philosophy that dominated their lives. It describes the terrible journeys that members of the family undertook to reach England, America, Canada, and Australia.

  •   Aileen: Thanks for the tip. I am familiar with the book and I was in contact with the author , Stephen Lally. It appears we are not directly related, although with the same name and coming from the same town, we were probably related centuries ago. In a small world vein, when I was growing up in Hoboken, NJ, we had a neighbor with the name George Donlon spelled with an o not an a. I have no idea where his family was originally from in Ireland. • From Aileen:

It was worth a try, sorry you're not the same family that would have been nice. I 'm sure you're right, connection could easily be there just so far back. I had never heard of the name Lally before so thought there might be a chance. WHen I mentioned it to my mother, she said she had only heard it once and that was a family she grew up with in Bayonne, NJ.. Thats funny about the George Donlon- it is spelled so many different ways. I think as they were mostly illiterate they didn't stick to one. I've had dna matches that are spelled various ways.  Good luck with your search.

  • My husbands great grandfather was a Robert Lally from Ireland. Grandfather of same name was born in USA in 1870's so the great GF would have migrated before 1870.

  • Shena: Would be happy to share any information I have. The family is from Loughrea in County Galway. As far as I know the family has been based , first in New York City, but primarily in New Jersey for the past 150 years. Do not know if anyone moved to the Midwest. Jerry Lally
