Maumtrasna is in County Mayo where an infamous murder took place in 1882 on the 17th August. THe Maumtrasna Murders have been the subject of much debate since because of the subsequent misscarriage of justice and the hanging an innocent man Myles Joyce

All three brothers emigrated to Stuart, Adair County, Iowa in the USA at different times between 1867 and 1881. They had one sister, Mary Lydon, who married a Joyce and stayed in Ireland.
