Michael Moloney was born in Youghal, County Cork around 1839.

He escaped the potato famine around 1847 and came to Wales. I do not know if he came alone or with his family. I think he first settled in Newtown, Cardiff which was known as Little Ireland. He moved to John Street, Cardiff and he married Mary Griffiths from Pentyrch near Cardiff in 1860. They lived in Treforest for a while and finally settled in a village called Aberkenfig.

They had 8 children and ran a pub called the Hollybush and Michael was also a master tailor and draper. They were a popular family and Michael also made clothes for patients in the local asylum. There are many tales that I have unearthed during researching of this side of my family. I do not know his Irish history only that his father was called John.

This photo is of my great, great grandparents Michael and Mary Moloney (Mary nee Griffiths and born in Wales) outside their pub in 1880. So much more to learn!

  • Really interesting piece! Always fascinating to find details of Irish ancestors, especially if you've discovered photos, too. How did you establish that Michael was bn 1839 and arrived in Wales around 1847? It's been a challenge piecing together my family's arrival to the UK, from Ireland. They appear in 1851 Eng and Wales census, with children born in Ireland. I'm just checking to see if i can learn anything from your findings . Good luck with your research!

  • Hi, I'm also the great great grand daughter of Michael and Mary. I would love to hear the stories you have found out when doing your research. I've been told a few, but don't know if there's any truth in them. Have you looked further back in their Irish history?
