I am trying to trace my Mulligan ancestors. My great great grandmather Mary Mulligan was born in Dublin in about 1844. She married James Blake, a soldier, from Clare , moved to New Zealand and then to Victoria Australia 1878.

On her death certificate her father Michael is recorded as a soldier. In my search of british army records I have found a Michael Mulligan from Roscommon in 18th Regiment of foot attested at Dublin aged 21 in 1840 and discharged 1844. this makes his birth about 1819 in Roscommon

I have in my possession a "penal Crucifix" dated 1724 which we believe has been handed down through the Mulligan family. From my reading , I think it is possible that one of my ancestors made the pilgrimage to St Patrick's Purgatory in 1724 and most likely came from around the Roscommon area. The crucifix has been handed down through the family and most likely handed to Mary Mulligan when she emigrated in about 1867

I would appreciate any clues about how to connect my Mulligans with Roscommon and also any hints re the pilgrimages in 1724.

Thankyou for this page
