  • Hi, I am trying to find information on my G G Grandfather John Devane, he was born C 1818 in Tipperary and married Ellen Ryan in 1836 at Cashel & Emly. His parents were Timothy Devane and Mary Gleeson. He had a brother Denis born in 1816 at Clonoulty but I would love to know if there were any other siblings and who were the parents of Timothy Devane and Mary Gleeson.

    John & Ellen's children were:

Timothy Devane b. 1837 Cashel & Emly, Mary Magdalen Devane b. 1839 Milltown, Clonoulty (my G Grandmother), Cornelius William Devane b. 1844 Milltown, Clonoulty, Johanna Devane b. 1846, Milltown, Clonoulty, Rodger Devane b. 1847 Cashel & Emly, Denis Devane b. 1851 Clonoulty, John Devane b. 1854 Milltown, Clonoulty & Bridget Devane b. 1858 Clonoulty.

They all came to Australia at various times

  • Hi Helen,

I'm a 4xgreat granddaughter of Tim Devane and Mary Gleeson.

My 3xgreat grandmother Johanna (Judith) Ryan nee Devane was born in Dec. 1809 so as Tim and Mary were married in Feb. 1809 I believe she was the eldest child born to them.

I only live a 10min drive from Miltown and my family branch are still living in the general area, we are scattered around the neighbouring parishes of Boherlahan, Knockavilla and Annacarty.

I've recently taken a DNA test and I uncovered your family branch in Australia and New Zealand thanks to this.

I too have Denis Devane in my tree but I also think William Devane, who married Bridget Hennebry (from the parish of Annacarty) in Knockavilla Church may have been another son as their children were born in Miltown, Clonoulty also.

What is frustrating me is that there seems to be age gaps between Tim and Mary's children in which other children most likely were born but I haven't uncovered any further children as of yet.

To help you further with your research, you have more Devane cousins in New South Wales, my GG granduncle Philip Ryan b.1837 emigrated there also and he and his family lived in Rose Bay, Sydney. I recently discovered that their family farm is now the Woollahra Golf Club. I know I also had two more GG granduncles Roger and Denis Ryan but I haven't been able to figure out where they went to yet so there's a possibility they may have emigrated also.

I have been working on figuring out the Gleeson line of the family and I've strong inclinations that we descend from the Gleesons in Clogher, Clonoulty but I have not been able to figure out any DNA connections as of yet.

If you would like to compare notes and discuss this more you can contact me on Ancestry or fiona007taylor@hotmail.com.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
