Patrick Cannan was born in Kinvara, County Galway about 1811. His surname is alternatively known as Cannane, Cannon, and Kinnane.

He was tried at Galway on the 26th March 1832. His crime: Whiteboy. He was sentenced to life and transported to New South Wales (Australia) on Eliza 11 (4) from Cork to Port Jackson. The ship arrived on the 6th September 1832.

He had a child, also Patrick, to Mary Dunn about 1831. Mary possibly was his cousin. Her parents were Timothy Dunn and Mappy Coyn. She had a sister called Winifred Dunn.

Patrick Jnr migrated to Australia in 1851. Winifred migrated there in 1853 and Mary migrated there in 1855.

Patrick Snr was granted a conditional pardon in 1852. He died in 1859 after succumbing to injuries following a fall from a horse.
