Patrick Fleming was born march 4 1890 in Carrick on Suir Tipperary to johanna Fleming(father unknown). he was the grand son of Patrick Fleming and Margaret Dowd also of Carrick on Suir.
As a young man he worked as a runner for the postal service in carrik on Suir and at 18 enlisted in the British Army with a group called the Irish Riflemen. His career in the military was short as 4 months after enlisting he was wounded in France(World War1)he told stories of being in a hospital camp in Africa treated by Nuns. Later he was transferred to a hospital in England . His girlfriend Johanna Shelly also from Carrick on Suir went to England and they were married right in the hospital.
They lived and worked in Ireland for 9 years or so before coming to Massachusetts with their three children. the passage was paid either by his uncle Thomas or his mother but the reason they came was that his mother missed them when she came to America to care for her ailing brothers. They came about 1932.
