PJ's American son, Tom, recalled how every St Patrick's Day the family had a big celebration. For many years, Tom thought that his father had been born on March 17th. He was surprised to learn his father's birthdate many years later.

Patrick Joseph (P J) Flaherty was born on May 4, 1872, in Ireland in Silevenavadoge, a townland in Kerry near Tralee. He was baptized the day after he was born. Family narrative is that his son, Thomas, thought for years that Patrick was born on St Patrick's Day! St Patrick's Day was always celebrated in the household in part because it was Patrick's saint's day. Family narrative, supported by a census report, is that he emigrated to NYC about 1898. No ship manifest was found of his immigration as of 2021. Patrick had eleven children, including a son, Thomas Francis, with Mary Crean. His poetry was published. He was a member of the local Democratic party. He was president of the Holy Name Society of St Margaret's Church. Patrick Joseph Flaherty died on April 6, 1953, in Connecticut, at the age of 80. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery. Many of his relatives, including his wife, were also buried there.

About 1898 was the emigration of P J Flaherty to the USA. As of 2021, the family has been unable to ensure his name on a ship manifest, nor the name of the ship.
