Migrated to/Born in USA

Have not been able to locate the birth/baptism for Patrick McLaughlin.  They should appear in the record of Michael and Alice Walsh McLaughlin, Tamnagh, Banagher, Derry, Ireland.  Patrick was born 17 Mar 1860.  I also cannot locate a immigration record.  Patrick and his brother, Bernard, came to the USA sometime in the mid 1880s. If you could assit me, I would be grateful.

Thank you,

Judy

  • Patrick was one of ten children to Michael McLaughlin (b. 1816 - d. 2 Mar 1898 Tamnagh, Banagher, Derry, Ireland) and Alice WALSH McLaughlin (b. 1826 - d. 24 Nov 1901 Tamnagh, Derry, Ireland).  Our great grandfather Patrick McLaughlin's siblings were, including Patrick:  Denis McLaughlin (1848–1914); Michael "Mick" McLaughlin (1850–1939); Mary McLaughlin McLaughlin (1851– ); Bridget McLaughlin (1853–1897); Patrick McLaughlin (1860–1926); James McLaughlin (1861– ); John McLaughlin (1862–  ); Edward McLaughlin (1863–1945); Thomas P McLaughlin (1864– ); Bernard Mc Laughlin (1866–1937).  Both Patrick and his younger brother Bernard died in Philadelphia, PA, USA.

We are aware that both Mary MCLAUGHLIN McLaughlin and Thomas P. McLaughlin were wed and had children.  Six of Six siblings with Ancestry DNA tests  have DNA matches with descendants of both Mary and Thomas P.

Mary MCLAUGHLIN McLaughlin and her husband James had Annie, Patrick, Bernard and Michael whereas Thomas P. and his wife Bridget had children Mary Alice, Michael and Bridget Jane.

There are many descendants of Patrick McLaughlin and his wife Annie, plus there seems to be many McLaughlin relatives in the U.S. where we are not sure of the relationship, but we suspect our 2nd great grandfather Michael McLaughlin was from a large family.  Michael's parents are not known.

  • Update to child of Thomas P. McLaughlin and Bridget LYNCH McLaughlin (Dreen, Banagher, Derry, Ireland):  Mary Alice McLaughlin (b. 1902 Dreen - d. 1957 Philadelphia, PA, USA).  Mary Alice married Bernard "Barney" Mullan (Mullen) in 1921.  They had a daughter Bridget Mullen on 1 Aug 1922.  Bernard "Barney" and Mary Alice MCLAUGHLIN Mullen departed Derry for Nova Scotia; they subsequently emigrated by train to the United States via Maine to Philadelphia, PA in 1923.  They had children Thomas in 1925 and Anna in 1928; Barney died in 1928 in Philadelphia leaving Mary Alice widowed.

Mary Alice lived with a Dougherty family during the 1930 US Census in Philadelphia, PA.  We believe her children were placed in a Philadelphia orphanage during some of the Depression years.  Her Naturalization paperwork in Philadelphia in 1932 names her children, including Bridget that she stated lived in Ireland, and named her deceased husband.

Mary Alice was a seamstress, eventually living in a home in the Germantown section of Philadelphia.  Her son Thomas lived with her family members from Derry County who also lived in Philadelphia, the O'Gara's as listed in the 1940 US Census.  Her cousin, through the Lynch family and Donahues (Donaghy) from Derry,  was the O'Gara family matriarch.

We have been unable to determine what happened to Bridget Mullen (b. 1 Aug 1922 Dreen - d. ?) who remained in Ireland.  Bridget's brother Thomas Mullen, after being discharged from military service in 1946, listed his mother's address in the Germantown section of Philadelphia; Thomas had two children - Thomas J. Mullen and Michael T. Mullen.  Thomas died in 1976.  Bridget's younger sister Anna married a Jacobs.  They had no children; Anna died in 1973.

Mary Alice MCLAUGHLIN Mullen died in Philadelphia, PA in 1957 at 55 years of age.  Mary Alice was my maternal grandmother's first cousin; the daughter of her uncle Thomas.

We were unaware of the Mullen connection, and that Mary Alice lived not far from our great grandfather Patrick McLaughlin (d. 1926), who lived in the "Devil's Pocket" area of South Philadelphia.  As an aside, the "Devil's Pocket" name for the neighborhood was alleged to have been attributed to a Catholic priest that said, "Even the Devil himself would have his pocket picked in that neighborhood, and he wouldn't know it."
