Patrick sailed to Australia in the Bounty Emigrant Ship Andromache, arriving in Port Phillip, ib 27 Jun 1840, He came to Australia with his brother William and William's wife and children, accompanying them was also Patrick and William's sister Bridget (Biddy). 

Patrick became a successful businessman in Kew, Melbourne establishing the Kew Family Hotel. Today, there is a street named O'Shaughnessy which intersects with Foley Street named after Patrick's son-in-law, William John Foley. Patrick married Eleanor Geary in Melbourne on 27 Nov 1843 at St Francis Roman Catholic Church. Patrick and Eleanor had six children born at Kew, Melbourne. 

There is a monument for the O'Shaughnessy Family Plot at the Boroondara Cemetery located in Kew, Melbourne Victoria, Australia.
