Great Grandfather Patrick was the second son of Michael and Catherine Dolan (nee Goode). He was born on 7th February 1849 in Lawrencetown and baptised at the Roman Catholic Church.
I don’t have any more information about him until his marriage to Mary (nee Casey) 1882. The marriage took place at the R.C. Chapel Kiltormer, now St Patrick’s Church, on 9th February 1882. Patrick was a Tailor and Mary a Seamstress and daughter of a Farmer.
He must have been living and working local to Kiltormer as the first son, Stephen, was born there in December 1882. After that, the family moved to Aughrim and between 1884 and 1897, seven more children arrived.
They are all listed in the 1901 census:- Stephen; Martin (my Grandfather); Bridget; Kate; John; James; Mary Ann and Patrick. Their address then was 18 Clonmerigaun, portion of Aughrim. The building return listed the address as a 2nd class private dwelling with 5 or 6 rooms. Stephen and Martin were Assistant Tailors, so I wonder if the address was being used as a place of occupation (making and repairing clothes?). The children were being well educated (would be nice to know the school?) as they were all listed as “read and write”, down to Mary Ann who was then 8 years old.
Despite what appeared to be a comfortable family living, Patrick died in 1903 . Cause of death was bronchitis and a weak heart and he was only 54 years old.
Grandmother Mary and her sons continued to work and support the family, but by 1911, all had left home apart from Stephen, Mary Ann and Patrick.
In the 1911 census, the family address was 5 Lissavahaun, Oatfield.
