Migrated to/Born in Australia

I am Patrick Ryan's Great Granddaughter. I have been searching for Patrick's family for years, I believe that I may have found the family, but need more information to confirm this.

I have been focusing on a family from Rossaguile, Ballinahinch and Killoscully; County of Tipperary; Diocese of Cashel and Emly. This family had parents Andrew and Catherine, children Mary, Judith, Daniel, William, Patrick, Margaret and Andrew.

Things I do know is that he was from Tipperary, Ireland

Parents, Andrew Ryan and Catherine Ryan

Born 28th July 1847

Immigrated to Australia between 1877 and 1893

Patrick married Margaret Daley/Daly on the 06 Apr 1893 at Sacred Heart Church, Toolleen, Victoria, Australia.

William Ryan was a witness at their wedding and we believe this may have been Patricks brother. Folk law says that Patrick left a sister behind in Ireland

Patrick and Margaret had 3 sons and one daughter, Andrew, Patrick, James and Margaret.

Patrick and Margaret ran the Wheatsheaf Hotel in Toolleen

Patrick died in Elmore, Victoria, Australia on 6th May 1923

  • Hello, I have just found your post and believe I am related to this family.  Baptism records show that Catherine Ryan, daughter of William and Mary Caplis,  was baptised 5 November 1816 in Newport. Address given is Gortshane, Newport. My mother was born in Coolboreen, my grandmother and 3 generations above that all born in Gortshane neighbouring townland to Coolboreen. My 3xgreat grandfather James Shinners was married to Anne Ryan probably from this same area, and probably explains why i have 14cM match on Ancestry with descendant of this Catherine Ryan b.1816.  Gortshane /Coolboreen is midway beween Newport and  Killoscully. Rossaguile townland is just the other side of the Turnpike Road as you exit from Coolboreen. Hope this helps.

  • Hi EileenR,

Thank you for making a comment. I have had this post up for many years and pop on occassionally to see if anyone has added a comment.

My recent research has led me to the possibility that William Ryan and Mary Caplis from Gortshane are the parents of our Catherine. Do you know Anne Ryan's parents were or do you have any thoughts on our connection?

My Mother and Uncle and myself have dna matches to families with Ryans, Shinners and Caplis.

Are you a member of the Newport Tipperary Facebook Group, I feel I have seen your name on there?

Look forward to working with you to help solve this puzzle.
