  • I am interested in tracingg my great grandfather. His name was Patrick Spellacy ( born about 1827) and he farmed in Ballykett Kilrush. He married Bridget O Dea who was from the neighbouring townland of Tullabrack Cooraclare. They had 7 children. James emigrated to New Jersey where he married Mary Bermingham also from Ballykett, Michael emigrated to Australia and married Margaret McInenery who was from Kilkee, Margaret emigrated to New Jersey where she married twice. There were two sons on the parish records called Patrick, one of whom I presume died, I have no record of the second son either. Eliza and Mary stayed on the family farm where Mary married, also twice, her first husband was Patrick Carey from Carnacalla Kilrush and they had four children, Mary and Patrick were my grandparents. Mary married again to Martin Carey from Leitrim, Killmihil Clare, no relation to her first husband.

The Spellacy name was fairly popular in West Clare in the late 1800's but the name has now died out. Patrick Spellacy died in 1900. I have a record of him on Griffith's valuation with land in Thomastown Kilrush, which is still in the family possession and possibly Pound street in Kilrush. I have been unable to identify any family before Patrick Spellacy which I am keen to do.

  • Hi Angela,

I, too, am researching a Patrick Spellicy, but mine was born around 1844 in ireland and emigrated to the united states around 1863. I am wondering if the Patrick I am researching was one of the sons of Patrick Spellacy and Bridget O'Dea.

Do you have any other information on the son you mention named Patrick?

    Thanks so much,

    Catie
