Peter Caldwell, son of Francis Caldwell and Ann (Nancy) Martin, was born in Drumcargy, Magheracloone Parish, County Monaghan about 1828, although he usually claims 1822 as his year of birth.  Peter's parents were married in 1827.  He immigrated to the United States in 1842 to Oneida County, New York, eventually settling in Chicago, Illinois sometime in the 1850s, where Peter is considered a pioneer of the city.  Peter married Ann Roach from Killard Parish, County Clare, at Old St. Mary's Catholic Church, Chicago, on 9 Jan 1856.  They had one child, Charles Peter Caldwell born in November 1856.

Peter had two, possibly four brothers also immigrate to Chicago: Patrick, Francis/Frank and, either brothers or cousins, Charles and Thomas.  One brother remained in Drumcargy, Owen.
