Peter McArdle and Mary Anne Kearns married August 19, 1877 in Enniskerry and Rebecca McArdle and Loughlin Smyth were witnesses. Loughlin was likely the son of James Smyth and Mary McArdle who married February 7, 1842 and resided in Kilmalin. Peter’s occupation was reported as car-driver starting in 1878 until approximately 1888 when he reported as a car-owner. The Irish 1901 census showed Peter was a car owner and Mary Anne was a laundress. Laurence is a post boy. Kate is a domestic servant. They lived at house #31 in Enniskerry. The home had 2 rooms with 2 front windows and a piggery. The 1911 Irish census showed they moved to house # 19 Enniskerry, formerly where Mary and Richard Coogan lived in the 1901 census. The home had 6 rooms with 2 front windows, one stable, one coach house and one shed. The stable, coach house and shed may have been added by Peter as they did not exist when Mary and Richard lived there. The sons Laurence and Henry live at home and report as hackney car drivers, and their sister Jane lives at home as well (Fig. 32). Alice married Edward McDonald on January 28, 1914. Alice was named after her grandmother, Alice Kearns, who also resided with the McArdle’s. Alice Kearns was present at the births of John and Laurence and died on November 9, 1907 at age 71 of senile decay and cardiac failure. Henry remained a bachelor. Mary Anne died November 29, 1923 of cardiac syncope. Peter was present at her death. Peter died September 24, 1925 of a brain hemorrhage and was in a coma for 10 hours. His daughter Alice was present at his death. Laurence was a car proprietor and brother Henry was present at his death. The photo shows two of Peter and Mary Anne's sons: Laurence and Henry from about 1935.
