Peter Murphy was a brother of Jack, Matt, Stephen, Bill and Tommy. He had 2 sisters Mary Mynihan and Annie Daly and Johnny, another brother who died at birth. They were the children of Tom and Anastasia Murphy of Glassganny Lr, Castlebridge, Co. Wexford.

He started work  in The Imperial Hotel Wexford Town at the age of 14. He became head porter by age 16. He moved to The Railway Hotel, Gorey where he spent 11 years.

In 1924 he came to Tralee as Manager of The Grand Hotel. He stayed there until 1942. He extended the hotel twice and could have owned it only for some mishap with the deeds.

In 1942 he purchased The Meadowlands Hotel in Oakpark and 2 acres of ground for the sum of 2000 irish pounds. He and his wife May both worked hard  in getting the hotel up and running. They worked as a team - she doing the bookings and Peter doing the buying and ordering and looking after the guests. They also had 3 young children to look after.

Peter took a keen interest in all the happenings around Tralee and many organisations had their meetings in The Meadowlands. While he was keenly involved in Kerry affairs, he never forgot his Wexford roots. He went back to Castlebridge yearly to see his siblings and his father Tom who lived until 1943. While there, he always visited his ancestors graves.

He died on Nov.29th 1985 aged 89.He is buried in Rath Cemetery Tralee with his wife. The Meadowlands Hotel is no longer in The Murphy Family.
