Stayed in Ireland

Richard Kennedy (1869-1916) married Elizabeth Mary Tracey (1869-1919) on February 1, 1891, in St Nicholas Church, Dublin. Richard was the son of John Kennedy (1838-1893) and Margaret Weldon (1839-1876). They moved frequently within the City of Dublin. They became parishioners of St Andrews where all their children were baptized.

We reviewed the 1901 Census of Ireland where Richard and Elizabeth Kennedy lived at 4.5 Patrick Street. There is no outhouse available for their house. House #4 has 7 rooms, 6 families, and 20 people. Elizabeth shares 1 room with her husband, Richard, a butcher, and their 4 children, ranging in age from 3 to 10. The family is Catholic. Richard and Elizabeth cannot read.

Margaret and her children spent 5 days in the South Dublin Workhouse  in August 1901, where she reported her residence prior to admission was “no abode.” The family also spent 17 days in the North Dublin Workhouse in May 1903, where she reported her residence prior to admission was the workhouse.

We reviewed the 1911 Census of Ireland where Richard and Elizabeth Kennedy live at 4.1 Peters Street. House #4 has 7 rooms, 5 families, and 22 people. Elizabeth shares 2 rooms with her husband, Richard, a wine porter, and their 6 children, ranging in age from 3 to 18.  Child mortality levels are utterly shocking. Married for 22 years, she gave birth to 12 children, of whom only 7 survived. The family is Catholic. Richard and Elizabeth cannot read.
