He married Mary Elizabeth Best (William Best and Sarah Mitford) in South Africa. She died in 1872
In 1873 he married Mary Waddell (James and Helen Cowans) in Naas, Co Kildare
They lived in Ireland,(Curragh Camp), Scotland (Broughty Ferry, Dundee) and England (Bury, Manchester)
He emigrated to Tasmania in 1878, with his wife Mary Waddell and eight children
