When Samuel May was born in 1811 in Cork, County Cork, Ireland, his father, Henry, was 41 and his mother, Mary or Mary Ann, was 31. The family is believed to have emigrated to Canada in the late 1820s, perhaps 1827, and moved to Murray Township, Northumberland County, in Canada West.

Lucinda died on January 14, 1880 while they were living in Murray Township, Northumberland, Ontario, and then Sam married Emma Baker on May 31, 1881, in Hastings, Ontario. He died on July 10, 1898, in Hastings, Ontario, having lived a long life of 87 years.

One of Sam and Lucinda's children was Robert May, born Oct. 18, 1861, in Murray Township. Robert married Ida Eloise Evans and they had two sons, Francis Harold and Howard.
