Sarah Ann Mitchell was the daughter of George Mitchell and Isabella Porter. She was born in Downpatrick, Co Down, Ireland. She was baptised in Church of Ireland, Downpatrick on 29 November 1854. She married William Hayes on 27 May 1871, a soldier in the Inniskillings, in Colchester, Essex
