Back to List

Sarah Belton was born on 28 Nov 1875 in Rathdrum to Andrew Belton, a tin plate worker, and Anne Caulfield. Her godparents were Michael Wedrick (?) and Ellen O'Doyle(who was present at her birth). She was named after her paternal grandmother, Sarah Gregory, who had died two years before she was born. Her grandfather Andrew lived with the family.

Sarah was the eldest of nine children. She only got to meet four of them.

In September of 1889, Sarah became infected with typhoid fever, a deadly disease spread by contaminated food or water. Over the eight weeks of her illness, she would have experienced painful headaches, lasting fevers, stomach pains, weakness and loss of appetite. Typhoid can also cause rashes across the skin. Sarah was found dead by her father on 26 Oct 1889. She was one month away from her fourteenth birthday.
