Sarah was born on 16 Oct 1893, named for an older sister who died a few years before she was born. Sarah's father Andrew had passed away in the early months of her mother's pregnancy so she never knew him. She was the youngest of nine children.
Sarah's mother Anne started taking in boarders to make enough money to keep the family going. They lived at 22 Main Street, a five room house with a slated roof and five front windows. Between 1901 and 1905, they moved to house one, which their mother bought in 1905. By 1911, only Sarah, aged seventeen, and her sister Annie are still at home with their mother. Sarah helped out her neighbouring sister Margaret with her children frequently.
Sarah left home shortly after the 1911 census and went into service in Dublin. A Sarah Belton, a housekeeper and daughter of farmer Andrew married a soldier named George Cleary on 17 April 1915, witnessed by Annie Carpenter and J Ryan. Annie Carpenter was formerly Annie Belton who married Frederick Carpenter and had a daughter, Nora with him. The only marraige record for a Frederick Carpenter is with an Elizabeth Belton, daughter of farmer Andrew. It is possible these two Belton sisters are Sarah and her elder sister, Elizabeth Anne.
