Sarah Nolan : Short Biography

Sarah Nolan was born in 1864 in Ballydaly, Tulsk. She was the daughter of Martin Nolan and Catherine Flanagan. Her name appeared on her birth certificate and some other records as Celia. She was one of at least five siblings.

She grew up in a two roomed thatched cottage with three front windows. There was a cow house, piggery and barn beside her house. Her father farmed nineteen acres.

In 1885, Sarah (21) was bridesmaid for her elder sister Susan for her marriage to Dan Cunnane. Susan named her daughter, Sarah Cunnane, born in 1891, after her.

Her father Martin (76) died in 1888 when she was twenty four after suffering from heart disease from three years.

On 22 Feb 1892, Sarah (27) married Patrick McGuire (29) in Tulsk Church. He was a farmer from Kye, Elphin. Their witnesses were Sarah's brother Patrick and her cousin Kate Tiernan.

Patrick and Sarah lived in a three roomed house with a thatched roof and three front windows. Patrick's brother Thomas McGuire lived with them until his marriage in 1908. They had eight children. The youngest died in infancy.

Patrick's small farm was beside their house, with a cow house, piggery and barn. They lived next to Patrick's aunt in law Ellen McGuire (nee Nolan, possibly a cousin of Sarah) and her children.

Her mother Catherine (84) died in 1905 in Ballydaly. She had been living with her brother Peter for the last few years.

Sarah died on 5 Dec 1918 in Kye from a general debility lasting six months. She was fifty four years old. The informant was her daughter Margaret McGuire.
