He met and married Julia Clayton, daughter of Patrick Clayton of Lisroyan in the RC Church of Strokestown, Roscommon, Ireland on April 6, 1915. Witnesses to this marriage were Bernard J Gurn and Tessie Gurn.

Stephen firts arrives in New York on May 14, 1905, with his brother Patrick who is going to stay with their brother, Michael Kelly at 2 McKinnley Blvd while Stephen is to go to 984 Jennings Street, Bronx.

He returns at some point to Ireland on to attempt to travel back to NYC on May 11, 1911 with Daniel Hanly. The immigration papers state": Last residence: Thomas Kelly, Corrigeen, Clooneyquinn Roscommon Occup.: Truck Driver To stay with: AUNT Brigid Kelly 736 Kelly Street, New YorkThis was found on Family -LDS site. Hanley to visit COUSIN Brigid Kelly.  They instead leave May 29, 1911 again with "Daniel Hanley of Corrigeen, mother Mary Hanley.  Daniel to visit COUSIN Stephen KELLY (!) @ 736 Kelly Street and Stephen to visit AUNT: Mrs. Buckley @ same address".

Stephen and Julia emigrated to the USA aboard the vessel "S.S. Baltic which departed Queenstown on July 15, 1920 and arrived in New York, USA on July 24, 1920. Stephen's occupation was listed as a wagon driver and Julia as a housewife. Stephen had nominated that he had been in the USA previously for a period of 8 years in New York. This period appears to be from 1905 - 1914.

He nominated his aunt Kate Kelly as his point of contact in the USA who resides at 736 Kerry St, Bronx, USA. They also indicated that the period of stay in the USA was to be 10 years. Stephen was 5'8" (height), Dark (complexion), Grey (Hair) & Blue (eyes). Julia was 5'6" (height), Fair (complexion), Fair (hair) & Blue (eyes).

Stephen appears to have returned to Ireland and then returned to the USA leaving Queenstown on Nov 4, 1920 and arriving in New York, USA on Nov 12, 1920. He traveled alone possibly for family business possibly a funeral. An additional trip nominates that he left Southhampton on Oct 27, 1920 aboard the vessel "S.S. Olympic" and arrived in New York on Oct 3 (should probably be Nov 3, 1920). It was also rumored that Stephen was involved with the AOH fundraising efforts in the USA and would return to Ireland with these funds to support the uprising, which might possibly explain his frequent travels between the two countries.
